This Club Just Keeps Growing

By Fawn Weaver on Monday, December 5, 2011

Did you know the Happy Wives Club has been growing recently at a rate of 75-100 women per day?  That is alot of happy wives!  This past weekend, I posted on our Facebook page the following question, “What do you love most about your husband?”  As you can imagine, we received tons of great responses.

One of the things I love most about this site, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, is when I pose questions like this to other women, it requires that I also self reflect on my own relationship and my own husband.  And every time I do that, I realize just how blessed I am to be married to Keith.

Many times, we focus on the big things our spouse does and forget about the smaller, more mundane tasks, like taking out the trash, working hard each day to provide, being the protective covering over our home, taking the car for a smog check, just to name a few.

This weekend, Keith looked at the stack of papers piling high on my desk and decided I needed a new filing cabinet.  But he wanted to get one that would match my office furniture perfectly.  Since the only one he could find matching that description assembled was over $600, he did the unthinkable.  He bought an unassembled wood filing cabinet.

Now, that may not sound too bad but for the fact that this cabinet seemed to have 1,000 pieces.  And to top it off, the instructions were not that clear.  The entire living room floor was covered in parts for this 3-drawer filing cabinet.  I offered to help, but as most hubbies would do, he kindly declined.

So I asked if I could watch a movie I’d just gotten while he worked.  And of course, the movie I wanted to watch was a total chick flick, Sweet Home Alabama.  So this poor guy is trying to figure out how to put this file cabinet with way too many pieces together while being forced to listen to Reese Witherspoon and her hunky southern costar play cat and mouse games in the background.

This was certainly not his kind of movie.  But he knew I’d been looking forward to watching it, while spontaneously bursting out in random song and dance every now and again:

Sweet home Alabama, oh, sweet home baby

Where the skies are so blue and the governor’s true

Sweet home Alabama, Lordy

Lord, I’m coming home to you, yeah yeah

Keith is such a loving and accepting man, so he just shook his head and gave me his, “only my wife” signature smile and kept building.  When he finished, I had the most perfect filing cabinet that will help me organize the mess on the left-hand side of my desk.  And he had nothing but the satisfaction of doing something kind for his extremely grateful wife.

So as we kick off this fabulous week, I’d love for you to share with us a small (seemingly mundane) thing your husband recently did for you that made you smile.  What small act or gesture fills your heart with gratefulness at its mere thought?

Until tomorrow…make it a great day!

It's hard for me to stick to just one thing my husband did recently to put a smile on my face but I'll try :) . On Saturday morning, I really had taste for chai tea from this small restaurant he'd never been to but I'd had a couple meetings at recently. I didn't feel like getting dressed to go get it but I really wanted to have one (well, two cups to be exact). As is usually the case, Keith got in his car and drove over to buy me two cups of chai tea. I greatly appreciate the many selfless acts he does for me each and every day.

That is so sweet of your husband! My husband had the stomach flu this weekend, but still managed to help me with the children while he was sick. It is those little things that make all the difference in the world. And all the little things my husband does add up to the reasons why I love being married to him!

  • Fawn Weaver

That's awesome, Jamie! There was a gal on Facebook who said her husband cuddled with her to put her to sleep because she had a cold and I thought, "Wow, that's love because he could catch the cold too!" It's such a blessing to have husbands who put our needs ahead of their own.

My husband and I have two kids under the age of three. Even though I'm a stay at home mom, I have other passions and projects that have been waiting in the wings for me to finish. This past thanksgiving I was able to complete one of those projects and probably the one that meant the most to me but I don't know what I would have done if my hubby hadn't stepped in and helped me out. One day he even took our two year old to school (he's a teacher) with him so I could get some work done (thank God he works at an extremely family oriented school). I never would have asked him to do that but the fact that he cared so much about whats important to me really makes me fall in love all over again. Thanks sweetheart! You're my favorite:-)

Christy Joy, that's awesome! Thanks for sharing :) .

We have seven kids, two of which are 5 month old twins. So we pretty much never get out alone. But he makes it a point to still "court" me right at home. And I think the thing that stands out most in my mind is how he always puts me first. Even in the rain he'll walk to my side of the car and open the door for me to get in first. I feel like Cinderella, just without the glass slippers. The kids would break them! :)

  • Fawn Weaver

LOL, Kasey! I think you're right. With seven kids, glass slippers would not be a good. How in the world are you able to do it? How do you and your hubby keep your marriage first? That is amazing!

He does the dishes before we go to bed so I won't have to do them in the morning. Oh how I love that!

Going through a rough time on the homefront right now, due to my mom getting really ill, really fast. Had to make a tough call on work. I wanted to leave my full time job because my mom isn't going to be around long – and she needs someone to care for her round the clock. He was completely supportive and completely understanding. He assured me that the Lord will provide our financial needs. It is such a blessing to have such a great man leading our family! I'm not feeling very "happy" right now, but I can still say that I am a "Happy Wife" with all sincerity!

  • Fawn Weaver

Thanks, Colleen, for your transparency! And you're right, even when we don't feel completely "happy" about the current situation, if our marriage and love is fully intact, it somehow makes everything else okay. Everything else is temporary. But if a marriage is nurtured, it will be a strong foundation in the best of times and in the worst. @ Emily – Don't you just love that! If I'm up working late and don't do the dishes before I go to bed, Keith will usually wash them before I wake up. I try not to let them happen too often but when it does, he never complains. We are truly blessed women.

The filing cabinet story made me smile. For Valentine's Day many years ago — back when we were still dating — my man gave me a filing cabinet as a gift! He was (and still is) this super-organized guy. I laughed when I got the gift, and he said, "What's so funny?" : )

I didn't get flowers or chocolates that year. But I still have the filing cabinet all these years later. And it reminds me how much I'm loved, every single time I open it. :)

  • Fawn Weaver

Love that, Jennifer! I can relate :) .

Yesterday I woke up and started cleaning a bunch. Before even asking my hubby to help, he just grabbed the vacuum and joined in with me. He also got the carpet cleaner and started spot cleaning. I was totally impressed. That really blessed me.

He is so supportive of my new venture, and he encourages and helps me see the ground I've covered when I just feel like I just won't ever get to where I want to be. He is always there with a smile and a hug.

  • Fawn Weaver

@Kim – I can totally relate. Husbands who are supportive of us as we're blog networking for hours and hours each day…what a blessing! @Monique- Can I borrow your hubby for one afternoon? Just kidding, Keith is the same way. If I'm cleaning up a bunch he'll always jump in and help.
